Budapest is an intoxicating city with multiple juxtapositions to amaze and often amuse
the seasoned traveler. For example Budapest’s pride and joy, the Danube, is an
historic river that is both majestic and regal as it bisects the rolling hills of the
sedate Buda side from the hip, trendy and lively Pest side. All the bridges that
cross the Danube are different, some modern and wide, others classical and
quite narrow, yet all can be crossed by pedestrians. The streets of Pest are
equally diverse. Andrassy Avenue is a tree lined, shop filled and lively boulevard
while Aradi Street, where Kapital Inn is located, is narrow and quiet, yet it is
located just one block from Andrassy!
Budapest’s architecture is quite unpredictable. On one corner you will see a classic
Secessionist or Art Nouveau building in pristine condition, on the next corner a
building whose facade is adorned with bullet holes from either World War II or
the 1956 Revolution. Fortunately, since 1989 and the “regime change” from
stagnant totalitarianism to vibrant democracy, thousands of structures have
been renovated to their original splendor.
Budapest’s political life is frankly exasperating. In fact, this is a place where in
the last 100 years residents have been forced to experiment with both extremes
of the political spectrum, from fascism to communism, and everything in between.
These massive ideological shifts have had an effect on the psyche of the population
of Budapest. Although all are proudly “magyar” (Hungarian for Hungarian), they
range from 21st century transformed, adapted and trendy capitalists to 19th century
“artifacts” who cannot cope with change and globalization.
Budapest also has a unique consumer culture. This city is home to the largest shopping
mall in Central Europe (West End City Center) located on four levels in a palatial
structure. Here you can find all the latest fashions, watch all the latest films, or even
enjoy eating sushi. However, just around the corner you will find dozens of Budapest’s
specialty shops that cater to very specific tastes. Whether you are searching for a
classic CD (or even LPs), or a first edition novel, you are sure to find the shop in
Budapest.
In sum, unlike some western capital cities, Budapest is unique. It is not the
amalgamation of two or three cities you may have visited in the past. The contrasts
will amaze and enthrall you because in the end there can be only one Budapest.
